Airscent K9s are trained to find ANY live human in a search area and are not scent-specific. They search off-leash independent from handlers, returning to the handler when they have found a live subject and leading the handler to the subject. They can help clear large areas of land quickly, using the wind to pick up any scent.
Airscent K9s can be deployed to quickly check trails and high-probability locations of missing subjects. Information can be obtained by 1) finding the missing subject, 2) looking for changes in behavior to indicate need for further searching, or 3) clearing the area of any persons.
As Airscent K9s are off-lead and often travel a distance from their handlers, they are not deployed in urban settings routinely. However, many are specially trained to work in disaster conditions on rubble piles to help locate survivors.
