Northwest Pennsylvania K-9 Search and Rescue
Remember Search is an emergency!!
These are some important tips for dealing with search emergencies
-Call for assistance right away
The theoretical search area increases exponentially every hour so the sooner trained resources enter the field the better chance there is for a positive outcome
Please call us immediately when you are dispatched to a missing person incident. We would much rather get called and be canceled enroute than get there too late.
-Preserve the point last seen
Set up the command post and staging away from the point last seen to prevent contaminating the scent and any other clues that may be there. If any emergency vehicles are in the area please shut them off.
It is important to limit access to the point last seen as well. Foot traffic can destroy clues left by the subject and having multiple people in the area can reduce a search dogs effectivness.
-Search At Night
Atmospheric conditions at night are usually favorable for search dogs to operate in.
Lost subjects normally remain stationary at night which increases the chance of finding the subject.
The subject may be in distress so they may not be able to wait until morning to be found.
